Commanders Fire Kingsbury

Kliff Kingsbury was fired by the Washington Commanders this morning for reasons TBA.

I'm glad the move was made in a timely manner. If you're going to do it, do it ASAP.

He had a wonderful first season. His Achilles heel was the running game. People say the running game was ranked fourth. That's fool's gold. Kingsbury did not seem to have a grasp on WHEN to run. In football history usually a strong running game helps strengthen the defense. A strong running game backs the defense off the quarterback.

The ability to "possess the ball" was going to be essential to this team in particular. George Allen was successful playing the Over-the-Hill gang because he always had a good running game. With an older roster and older contributors on defense, keeping the defense rested was going to be paramount.

There's no debate. The Commanders had plenty ability to run. They had no sensitivity as to when to run. They had a pretty bad year on offense in Washington in the area of situational football. And in complementary football.

Losing Austin Ekeler hurt. But the backs were mostly healthy and effective the whole year. They just weren't called on when the Commanders absolutely HAD TO RUN.

When an opposing offense runs 92 plays on your aging defense, you're failing to "possess the ball." Your offense is the only thing between complete exhaustion and your out-manned defense.

They did not have the defense's back. They did not seem to know there is an organic relationship between the running game and the defense.

That was why they were blown out quite a few times this year.

I hope they don't do the old boys club with the coordinators. Hiring buddies. I guess that is the definition of "brotherhood". But there is a sense Quinn is outdated on defense. He could use a fresh young talent on defense. Harvesting a DC from college ball worked for the Ravens, as the Seahawks can attest.

Surprisingly, Quinn's Buddy System might work better finding an OC. Both Quinn and Peters are up to snuff on the styles of offense currently successful in the League. Defense not so much.

My pick would be Matt Burke. But not gonna happen.

Dan Quinn Don Quixote: Onward to Glory He Goes!

When I think of Spain I think of Miguel de Cervantes.

And when I think of the Commander's Head Coach, Dan Quinn, I think of Don Quixote, Cervantes' creation.

Quinn looks like the Knight Errant.

He goes to Spain with a team of Sanchos in tow.

The Brotherhood.

Here a Sister sings of the Brotherhood

My personal favorite is Johnny Mathis' Medley of the Great Knight.

"Hear me now Oh Thou Bleak and Unbearable World, Thou are base and debauched as can be!

And a Knight, with his banners all bravely unfurled, now HURLS DOWN HIS GAUNTLET TO THEE!

I am I, Don Quixote,
the Lord of La Mancha,
My Destiny calls and I go!

And the Wild Winds of Fortune
Will carry me onward
Whither so ever they blow

Whither so ever they blow
Onward to glory I go!"

The Foggy Bottom

Who has PTSD in Washington?

What is it? The definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results?

Dan Quinn did the same thing in Atlanta.

He took over the defensive play calling.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

He did that twice in Atlanta. In 2019, he went 7-9 splitting his attention. They did win four straight to end the year.

He tried to defer to Raheem Morris in 2020. Went 0-5 and was fired. Injuries there too. There was a brotherhood there too

The brotherhood is looking more like a cult than a culture.

Is the third time the charm?

Maybe Quinn has PTSD.

If he has a repetition neurosis it means he wins 4 straight to end the year and 2026 will be as lost a year as this one is.

It looks like some people said.

Quinn is confused. That trickles down to his players. That is why the team seems so weird.

It is not a curse.

It is brain fog.

That's a Wrap

Season is over for the Washington Commanders.

The rest of the year is just going to get ugly. The NFL is torture when it is ugly.

I'm too old for this anyway.

The Team belongs to a new generation.

There is more to life than football.

I Want You to Shut Up

Seriously.

I want you to shut up.

I want you to stop telling people Jayden Daniels is not RGIII.

I want you to stop telling people they're crazed by PTSD.

I want you to tell NFL.COM to take down the Game Preview in the which they featured RGIII getting his knee torn off by these same Seattle Seahawks.

There is no lower form of life than humans cursing other humans.

I think they should be fired. I am going to count on the better angels out there, if there are any in the NFL, to spare them.

For my part, I am done with the National Football League.

They stoop that low there's a darkness of soul at bottom of it.

Maybe Not RGIII But Strasburg?

Is Jayden Daniels more like Strasburg than Griffin the Third?

Good question for Thom Loverro, baseball guy.

Is it a good bet Daniels will be on innings limit at least for the first handful of seasons?

I don't like the one guy theory.

You know.

That Jayden is all we Commanders fans got. He's our only shot at winning a ball game.

Where is the running game?

It is on the Practice Squad. You run him. Don't use him for your fancy blocking schemes. He has only one destination: the End Zone. That's his focus.

Why is it not yours?

You need a blocking back fullback Sinnott. Use him on a fullback screen. Swing pass in the flat. Touchdown. With blocking.

It's Secretariat Theory. Let the backs run. They're tremendous machines.

Where is receiver help?

On the Practice Squad. Been here since training camp. Unless they have brain injuries, they should be able to run a route. And catch a ball. And use a height advantage.

The Defense experienced Championship caliber football that first half versus the Chiefs. They now have muscle memory regarding how it feels, what it looks like. They got a copy in their brains.

That bodes well. They needed experience versus top flight competition. They got it. The bar is set. They have a metric now.

Why Watch It?

All week the Media was saying the Kansas City game was going to be a waste of time.

I took their advice and didn't watch it.

The highlights showed Washington played a half of football. That was good.

They ran out of gas.

Up tempo teams. Running out of gas. Sounds logical.

This team can't play four corners. No stall ball. No rested defense. No running game.

The Local Media is right. Jayden is all they have.

If I know that, as a defensive coordinator, I'm going to have my guys lower the boom on him. Make sure he is hit every play. That's it for Washington. All you have to do. Everybody is injured including the only guy they got.

On top of that, they don't know each other. They haven't played with each other. Guy comes into the huddle you go "Who are you again?"

That's way too easy to beat.

So why watch it?

Guest Picker: Michel de Nostredame

The No-Math Dunce Cap finishes the non-calculative portion of the season at 18-19. Although it was not an entirely thoughtless undertaking, analytics did not play a role in the process.

We will do Psychic Hotline guest appearances until Week 10. Then math will show its ugly head.

This week's guest picker is Michel de Nostredame. His technique? Blind intuition.

Commanders OutWhitt Chargers, 27-10

The Washington Commanders, featuring a JD5-led offense and an electrified defense, defeated the banged up Los Angeles Chargers 27-10.

The Chargers won time of possession but scored just 10 points in 34 minutes 19 seconds. The Commanders were the more efficient scoring machine putting up 27 points in 25 minutes 41 seconds.

The Chargers ran for 155 yards but 60 of those came from gritty, combative QB Justin Herbert. Omarion Hampton was limited to 44 yards. A paltry total when compared to his dominant output versus the Giants.

The Chargers were over 50% on third downs. So it is hard to see Jim Harbaugh looking at the offensive stats and not accepting them had they been offered before the game.

The difference may have been the 5 sacks and 2 turnovers generated by the Commander Defense. Their line looked like a tsunami at times. Dorance Armstrong continued his strong season in the sack department pocketing two. Von Miller had a sack and a half and Jacob Martin had a half sack. Johnny Newton had a sack.

The defense played better team ball. Newly acquired (Preston Smith, Darnell Savage) and developmental talent (Jordan Magee) made contributions.

The return of dynamic point guard Jayden Daniels expanded the separation gains between Commander receivers and Charger DBs. JD5's no name receiving corps performed well. Deebo Samuel, the biggest name and veteran mentor, led the way once again with 8 catches. Interestingly, Jacory Croskey-Merritt caught 2 for 39 yards and Luke McCaffrey caught a 50-yarder. Giving future opponents more to think about.

That on a team already offering a surplus of problems to think about for NFL defenses. It means Kliff Kingsbury has more notes he can hit during improv sessions.

It was Bill's first 100 yard game, 111 on 14 carries. He scored two tuddies. His light-heartedness and enthusiasm was definitely a sunny day for a team singing the blues.

Bill is second only to Jayden in that regard.

This was a light-heartedness you could see coming in Joe Whitt Jr.'s press conference

He definitely looked as if he knew something we didn't.

Hopefully Coach can keep them playing with each other and not against each other.

Continue being light on their feet.

History of Chargers Washington

Here's bits on history of Chargers-Skins, Special Teams in D.C., and some fourth-and-ones.

History

The Chargers and Commanders are related.

Joe Jackson Gibbs was the Offensive Coordinator for Don Coryell's Chargers for two years ahead of taking over in Washington. Gibbs was with Coryell at San Diego State.

I didn't know Bill Walsh was also a Coryell Offensive Coordinator at one point.

I used to think West Coast = Walsh East Coast = Coryell. Now what? Intercontinental Coast?

Norv Turner was East Coast. Norv's best year as Head Coach?

You guessed it. The 2009 . . . San Diego Chargers.

His defensive coordinator that year?

Riverboat Ron Rivera. Most recently Skins-Commanders Head Coach.

The 1980 Chargers were something. Interestingly, Joey T and the Skins beat that great Chargers team, 40-17.

Bobby Beathard was general manager for the Skins and the Chargers. Went to the Super Bowl with both squads.

Stan Humphries, former Skins QB, was the Quarterback for the 1994 Charger team that lost to the Niners in the Super Bowl.

Special Teams

Is Special Teams due a big game for the Commanders? Let's remember their heritage.

Mike Nelms

Bill Malinchak

Herb Mul-Key

B-Mitch Tuddies

Malinchak was about carving your niche. Mike Nelms was about bringing the hammer. Herb Mul-Key was about going the distance. B-Mitch was about taking it to the house.

Special teams is a nascence. It has always been the origin story of many a great NFL Career. Not just players.

Remember. Dick Vermeil? Marv Levy? Special Teams Coordinators for George Allen.

This just so happens to be a Washington Commander Special Teams Unit that can live up to the Old George Allen Special Teams squads. Outside of adding Ja'Corey Brooks and Donovan Edwards to the return man rotation, I can't think of anything more they can do than what they are doing now.

Fourth and Ones

I thought Joe Whitt's remarks about social media to be spot-on. Turn off your phone. Get off the grid. Other people that's hell. Nobody outside the locker room knows what they're talking about. It's a waste of brain. This is your brain on social media. It is a total loss of focus.

It also sounds like Coach knows what the problems are on defense. Put away the cape. Work with each other.

Makes sense. They've only had four games together. But . . . preseason is over.

Light-heartedness: light-hearted focus, light-hearted concentration, light-hearted communication. Football joy. Building authenticity. Building trust. Dispensing with impostor syndrome. Can't do it with doom and gloom. Or dating negative Nancies.

Doom and gloom is grist for the mill.

Use it to build some fire.

Crib Notes: Release the Kraken

Omarion Hampton is the key on Sunday versus the San Diego... the Los Angeles Chargers

Omarion Hampton is not Bijan Robinson.

Maybe not. But he can do what Robinson did against the Commanders.

Do we believe the Commanders can stop a good running back from scoring on the wheel route?

It is not a good bet right now.

Where does the Commanders pass rush come from? Put Newton at end? Preston Smith? Dexter Manley?

I wish. Who has Manley-type energy on this team? Kinlaw, I think. Payne, Newton or Kinlaw at end. Goldman at tackle. And a Buffalo Nickel at linebacker. A hybrid. Hybridize that sucker.

Last win versus the Chargers was in 2013.

Time for Kain Medrano (4.46) on third down? Tyler Owens at linebacker? Some speed on third down would be good. Some tackling would be better.

The Defense needs the same emotional turnaround Coach Raheem Morris got from his football team last Sunday.

The Chargers lost their ball game last week. They did the cross country losing thing. They're home like the Falcons were last week.

Could be bad timing again for Washington.

The Washington Defense needs to think everybody thinks they suck. Everybody on defense is getting cut or fired.

Because the Chargers are going to check that gut. Harbaugh is going to ask you: Have you hit rock-bottom or are you a bottomless pit?

Should Robbie Anderson . . . uh Robbie Chosen play? Chosen's career. Name change story

Can he still make plays?

And I guess the question is: Would the Chargers consider Chosen a threat? Or another fading elder statesman?

If the Chargers do respect Chosen, yeah. I guess play Chosen. If only to get the Chargers thinking. Thinking equals stinking. We want the Chargers to stink. Stink of overthinking. Overthinking is like Peanut Butter. It gunks up the engine.

Or should Ja'Corey Brooks play?

Brooks would make plays. He's a playmaker. Not a GRE taker. Like Donovan Edwards.

Edwards is a playmaker. He can't block? You don't put him in to block.

You put Edwards in to run the ball. To catch the pass. To throw the halfback pass. To take it to the house. He's a threat. Defenses react to threats. Once they react you've got ways to manipulate them.

Edwards also played for Harbaugh who may overcompensate when he sees Edwards in there. Thinking he will do to me what he and I did to Ohio State.

I think the Chargers will think Jayden Daniels is the only threat. Most people would agree with them. Including Commanders fans.

He's the Kraken. Release the Kraken

The Offense doesn't need fixing?

No. It needs more octane. It is going to have to score even more points. Multiple threats are required. Jayden equals more points. But enough points?

Seems we are in Air Raid Philosophy. 55-50 type games required.

Long trip west. Early arrival to defray fatigue? Is mental energy on defense going to be possible given cross country travel? Does confusion on defense clear up with jet lag? Or will the defense still lag behind?

Good news for anti-public bettors. Chargers are scheduled to win according to 80% of the Public. The Chargers are -3 favorites according to Wunderdog.

Congratulations to the Chargers for their victory in advance.

Falcons Back from the Grave

The Atlanta Falcons returned from the grave, at least for one game, vanquishing the Washington Commanders 34-27. ESPN Boxscore.

Michael Penix and Bijan Robinson led the Falcons. Robinson had 181 yards offense. He hurt the Commanders in the passing game, catching 4 for 106 yards, 69 of them on one play. Falcons are 2-2.

Washington was led by Chris Rodriguez (8.4 yards a carry) and Bill Croskey-Merritt (6.7 yards a carry). Deebo Samuel caught all his targets and went 6-72 and a Touchdown.  The Commanders fall to 2-2.

Atlanta has the tie-breaker for the playoffs.

Next up for the Commanders are the LA Chargers. Immediately jumping to the forefront of Commander Concerns is the dynamic Charger Running Back Omarion Hampton who bowled over the Giants despite a Charger loss. Hampton's boxscore. Here's how another Pete Carroll coaching tree team dealt with the rookie phenom.

If Jim Harbaugh hears you might have trouble stopping the run, it is like Roy Scheider feeding chum to the Great Whites. You are asking for it.

Commanders Fan Vlogs were livid over the loss. Enter at your own risk.

Here's John Keim's take.

Here's Kevin Sheehan's take

Summation: The fear of a lot of Commanders' fans is that Jayden Daniels is all there is to the Commanders. Like John Elway under Dan Reeves.

The Media seems to consider reporting on Daniels to be the only thing they need do to cover Washington.

That leads to a "Hey, Jayden will bail us out!" attitude. He will at times. Like Elway and his drives.

But championships? No. That takes a Team.

Let's hope, the preseason now being officially over, the Commanders will continue to be a learning institution and progress over time.

Let's not fire anybody or try to get other team's coaches fired. Let's hire ourselves. Every swinging guy.

Exercising good football self-care. Good self-scouting. Best football practices.

And some genuflection before a higher power.

They have 13 games left.

Falcon Game is Uncanny: Trick, Trap, Trouble

Tough situation for the Washington Commanders this week.

Seems people have broken the Falcons game down to if Jayden plays, they win. If Marcus plays, they lose. I'm of the opposite intuition. That is based on feelings. Nothing more than feelings. Trying to forget my . . .

Feelings of love.

The meme is floating that Kingsbury lets Jayden create and doesn't create himself. When Marcus plays, Kliff feels free to create. Is it a deeper into the playbook thing?

The Falcons are talented. But they have some tectonic problems going on. They should have some things figured out by now. But they don't. They give off a little 86 Bears energy. All the talent in the world. But they couldn't stop bickering.

The Falcons need to stop bitching and get to it. Run the ball. Play defense. Especially against Washington. Why?

Because the game plan doesn't change much whether they play Marcus or Jayden. Neither one needs to be on the field for long stretches if you are the Falcons.

If they are going to beat the Commanders this year, now is the best time. Commanders are banged up on Offense. Their receiving corps is depleted. So they probably are gonna come with the running game.

Atlanta is hit and miss against the run. Some don't agree. They see a weak middle. They need to play a Vikings type game versus the Commanders run game.

I wouldn't assume the Falcons are going to lose because they lost to the Panthers. The Early Season in the NFL is the uncanny valley. Weird things happen because teams aren't ready. They are not grooving. They are not calibrated. There are wild mood swings week to week.

They don't have the right look

And because the season takes an eternity to complete, being 2-2 at week four doesn't mean you are out of it.

Neither of these particular ball clubs will be out of the running with a loss.

I think the spread should be Falcons -3.

I see zero difference between them. With the home team getting the traditional field goal gratuity.

Public is still on Washington at 62%

Dangerous Dirty Bird Football Team

I don't know if you noticed.

But Caleb Williams is looking better these days. For more on that and for your scouting purposes, see the QB School's assessment of Caleb at this point in his "journey".

We have to play him.

Cowboys lost CeeDee Lamb in that one.

Here are a couple highlight reels on Darnell Savage. Good veteran pickup by Adam Peters.

This year seems likely to challenge Peters' skills at reconstructing the roster on the fly. That's OK. That's why he's here.

What do you think is going on with the "quad" injuries this year? We have two of them and the season still has fourteen more games to go. Is this a result of something they do in the weight room?

People think the Atlanta game will be tough. The media seems to feel there is too much bad blood between the Falcons and Kirk Cousins to have him start to spell Michael Penix Jr. (Prisco picks the Falcons.) Either QB would be highly motivated. Have the Falcons hit rock bottom, where resurrection is galvanized, or is their problem bottomless? The type of bottomlessness we had here.

Kirk has a penchant for resurrection. If he starts I expect he'd play a whale of a game. If the Falcons get Robinson going, they'll be tough to beat no matter who starts at QB. Expect them to swing away.

Against the Commanders defense? Where stopping the run has been the question? Robinson is the key.

If Kirk plays, I'd pick him for fantasy purposes. Could top 400 yards passing.

How about Carson Wentz with the Vikings?

Here's Wunderdog's Public Betting Consensus. Commanders currently at 62% win. At -1.5.

Remember last year's game. OT win by Commanders. Penix Quarterbacking.

Penix has muscle memory, as do the Falcons in general, of success versus Dan Quinn.

And at the other end, Commanders seem to do better in rematches.

The game is a pick em.

With the Falcons on implode or explode.

Could be like that Dallas Giants game a while back.
