I was surprised the Ravens did not use the exclusive rights franchise tag on Lamar Jackson.
The thing that stands out to me is he has played just one full season in his five years in the NFL. That season he started only seven games. He hasn't played more than 12 since 2020. I could see the Ravens thinking we need more participation from our Big Money guy.
Any Big Money move by the Commanders would have to take that all into account.
There is no doubt Jackson can be an NFL MVP. Unlike some QBs who are big ticket items, Jackson is a winner with a W-L record of 45-16. He was almost unstoppable in 2019. You look at this and wonder: Is his passion gone? Is his body done?
I haven't done a study on it but it would make sense dual-threat Quarterbacks would develop injury issues. Jackson is light at 212. That's not much if you are out in space a lot. He's lanky enough a linebacker could snap him in two and bring him back to camp for kindling.
But of course he had two 1,000 yard rushing seasons. If you are looking to run a dual-threat QB point guard offense and supercharge your running game, you have to consider Jackson. But when you have a one in five chance of getting a full season out of him and must cough up a couple first round picks, is it worth it?
Seems like the 49ers, who are used to Quarterbacks not playing the whole season, would be a better fit. I hear they need a third quarterback.
Anthony Richardson is a better gamble. He's bigger and stronger. Bryce Young is a better all-around Quarterback. They come on rookie contracts.
So if the Commanders gamble they should gamble on the young guys.
I think going with Sam Howell and a veteran backup is a good plan, with a young guy Bieniemy can tutor.
