The Free Agency period begins today but as we all know it began Monday. The Commanders have made some moves and incurred a huge loss. They have also parted ways with their Offensive Line Coach.
Commanders lost Taylor Heinicke to the Falcons where word is he can compete for the starting spot but he's likely to be the relief pitcher and mentor. Heinicke was a stone-cold great football guy and the Falcons have got themselves a gem of a locker room presence.
Who will replace him? I like Jacoby Brissett. But the word is out on Brissett and there will be competition for him. Not the least of which will be the Eagles. Somebody has to point out the talent drain going on in Philly and make it plain we're a contender. And if he signs with Philly, we have to think strategically about Gardner Minshew. He can break down the Philly offense for us.
After those two, its up for grabs.
The Commanders brought in two veteran O-Lineman in T-G Andrew Wylie, an ex-Chief and Nick Gates, a G-C from the New York Football Giants. These two guys are in their late twenties and Gates had a traumatic injury in a game against D.C. a couple years ago. Age and injuries are concerns on the line which arguably were not remedied with these moves. Wylie maxed his Super Bowl exam and he knows how he got there and that's infectious from a locker room standpoint.
Gates is a facemask breaker but his injury took several surgeries and is a worry.
The Commanders will still need to bring youth and health in at O-Line. If they can't get healthier at the position it isn't going to matter who will be coaching them.
It may be too much to ask, but former Redskin Andy Heck would be a great choice to coach the line. I doubt Andy Reid will give him up. But he played for Norv Turner's 99 team that went to the Playoffs.
Washington also claimed Cameron Dantzler off waivers.
